Abstract Expressionism Art
The first thing I learned about Abstract Art is that it was American. It shifted focus in the art world from Paris to New York. Instantly I went from feeling meh about abstract art to loving it for purely dumb patriotic reasons. I loved hearing about the history to it and how it was a weapon used to fight communism. It showed the creativity and the intellectual freedom we had as americans. If that's not one of the dopest thing you've ever heard then I don't know what to tell you. So abstract art isn't just about color or form, it's about the world and the politics that surrounded it. That adds much more context to the art and shows that it transcends what's on the canvas.
Some of the art like a bit of Jackson Pollocks work didn't really resonate with me but with how our presenter explained it I can see why it was groundbreaking and why so many people loved it.
My favorite artists by the end of this were Morris Louis and Roy Lichtenstein. Louis' Tet just feels great to look at and if I owned it I could imagine myself staring at the cool analogous blend of blues to relax. And Roy Lichtenstein's Little Big painting may be a satirical response to abstract expressionism but I still love it.
